What are the difficulty changes coming to Diablo 4 Season 8?

Posted: Mar 20,2025

Blizzard has announced plans to raise the difficulty in Diablo 4 for Season 8, tweak the Legendary gear drop rates, and reintroduce a boss from Diablo 3. In the latest Diablo 4 Campfire Chat, Blizzard explained that players in Season 7 reached max level much faster than expected. To address this, Season 8 will slow down the progression to level 60 by reducing the drop rate of Legendary items, making power gains feel more impactful. Design director Colin Finer emphasized that the goal is to create a more rewarding and satisfying experience as players advance through the levels.

Regarding the Torment difficulties, it looks like things are about to get even more challenging for players seeking the top rewards that Sanctuary offers. In Season 7, about 50% of Diablo 4 players reached the highest difficulty (Torment 4), but Blizzard plans to reduce that number significantly. Design director Colin Finer explained, "From a philosophical perspective, we want the hardest Torment tier—this time, Torment 4—to be aspirational. For us, that means around 10% of players should be able to reach it."

If you're going to adjust the game's difficulty, Season 8 seems like the perfect time, as it will center on bosses, adding three new formidable enemies for players to conquer. Last month, Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson hinted at the return of an "old friend" in Season 8, and now it's been revealed: Diablo 3's Lord of Lies, Belial, is making a comeback. Additionally, players who own the Vessel of Hatred DLC will gain exclusive access to Urivar, another powerful boss being introduced to the game.

While April's fight through Sanctuary may be tough, the spotlight on bosses introduces an exciting new feature: Boss Powers. There will be 24 abilities to unlock, each offering Main and Modifier effects. You can equip one Main ability along with three Modifiers at a time, with these abilities inspired by the game's powerful bosses, including Lillith, the Mother of Hatred herself.

Blizzard is removing Summoning materials in Season 8, so all bosses will be available to summon without restriction. Instead, you'll need to craft Lair keys to access the chests they drop. For players seeking a true test of endurance, Season 8 will also feature Apparition Incursions, a fast-paced boss rush mode that pits you against ten random bosses in a row. Best of luck!
